ZimAchievers Awards light up South Africa

Zimbabwe Achievers Awards (ZAA) last night honored the year’s high achievers at a glittering ceremony held at The Venue Melrose Arch graced by the Zimbabwean Ambassador to South Africa HE David Hamadziripi in Johannesburg.

The ZororoPhumulani ZAA SA edition was the 6th annual edition recognizing and awarding the leading lights in the Zimbabwean communities whose contributions have changed societies both home and abroad.

Entrepreneur Tatenda Mungofa, musician Sharmaine Mapimbiro aka ShaSha and comedian Long John were the biggest winners on the night, walking away with two gongs each at an event described as heartwarming by ZAA International Founder and Chairman Conrad Mwanza.

“It is very heartwarming and beautiful to gather here today as one people and celebrating all that we have done in such a difficult year. Our annual dinner gala was postponed from April due to Covid-19 induced lockdowns but that did not dampen the will to succeed of our people and today we gather to celebrate each other,” said Mwanza at the event.

“Today, what we are seeing is an example of Zimbabwean resilience and excellence in difficult times. Congratulations to all our nominees and winners, Zimbabwe needs more people and organizations like these as we work towards the common goal, a big thank you to our sponsors and partners for this amazing event.”
Ambassador Hamadziripi also commended Zimbabweans who are dotted around the world, whose works have positively impacted communities’ home and abroad and urged people to stay innovative and dedicated to celebrating each other.
ZororoPhumulani CEO Edwin Anderson expressed his congratulations to the achievers and affirmed his company’s dedication to supporting noble causes and providing the best and affordable services to communities.
South African filmmaker and legendary actor Thapelo Mokoena received the Chairman’s Honorary Friend of Zimbabwe Award and paid glowing tribute to the natural beauty and friendly nature of Zimbabwe.
“I’ve always said to my brother Conrad (Mwanza) Zimbabwe is like the love I never experienced. I call it the land of the living. When I first moved to Joburg I stayed at an apartment with a friend who grew up at a farm near Lake Kariba called Terrence Springer who always told me stories about Zimbabwe and how beautiful it was. It was always my desire to visit and I recently experienced the beauty first hand in a recent trip. Through those stories I’ve always wanted to make a film about Zimbabwe. In my early days in the industry my world was surrounded by the beautiful people from Zimbabwe and I realized I didn’t know much about my continent and had never visited Zimbabwe until recently,” said the actor, who was in Zimbabwe last month.

The awards were headline sponsored by life assurance firm ZororoPhumulani and recognized recipients in categories such as business, entrepreneurship, media, sport, entertainment and community, among other categories.

Notable recipients included Plan My Wedding SA founder Chelsea Evans, musician Nox Guni with an Honorary Award for Services to Music,, Sony ATV A&R Manager Munya Chanetsa as well as EFC champion Themba Gorimbo.
“The journey to becoming a champion seems easy when you have attained the goal but there are so many obstacles that we have to overcome especially in foreign lands to make a living. I have personally gone through serious challenges and I am grateful to be honored by my fellow Zimbabweans,” said Gorimbo.
Soccer legend George Shaya was also honored with a Chairman’s Special Recognition for Services to Sport, along with Universal Music Group SA & Sub Sahara MD Sipho Dhlamini for services to Music Excellence.
The awards were hosted by actress and socialite Mbo Mahocs, with entertainment provided by Bekezela and rising star Lolo Skai. Zimbabwe Achievers Awards commemorated their 10th anniversary this year since their inception with the flagship ZAA UK edition in 2010.

Press Statement

Zimbabwe Achievers Awards would like to inform the public that the ZAA 10th Anniversary celebrations and Awards Dinner Gala set for Friday 10 April 2020 in Victoria Falls have been postponed to December as part of wider protective measures taken in  the interest of public health in light of the spread of the Corona virus.

The decision was made after wide consultations and advice from relevant authorities and actors such as the World Health Organization (WHO),  governments and health experts and have come to a collective decision along with principal partners ZimThrive and other sponsors.

The ZAA 10th Anniversary event was set to welcome a large number of people based in various parts of the world, but in a bid to minimize the risk of the spread and impact of the virus the event will now be held in December in the resort town.

The event was part of ZimThrive’s homecoming initiative along with various other affected events and we are optimistic of a successful event once the precautionary measures are lifted and the situation under control.

“Following advice and guidelines from WHO, the Zimbabwe government and respective governments globally we feel that minimizing travel at the time will reduce the spread and impact of the virus.”

“Our key priority is the safety and health of our fellow Zimbabweans and we have collectively made the decision to postpone the impending homecoming set for 1-30 April 2020. The event will now take place from 1-31 December 2020,” read part of the statement released by ZimThrive.

As ZAA we put the public interest and safety above everything else and will continue cooperating with relevant health authorities regarding advice on the matter and apologize for any inconvenience caused in the meantime.

We would also like to advise that at the moment all other editions on our regular calendar are going ahead as planned with ZAA South Africa scheduled for April 25th, ZAA UK on May 30th and ZAA USA edition taking place on June 6th 2020. Any enquiries pertaining to the events can be addressed to

We would also like to thank all stakeholders, media and partners who have been playing a key role in preparations and look forward to hosting the event in December. The exact dates will be announced in due course after completion of consultations.

Zimbabwe Achievers Awards International has opened the nominations and revealed the dates and venue for the 3rd edition of ZAA Australia, slated for Saturday 23rd November 2019 in Sydney.

The annual awards ceremony are in their third year running Down Under and will be held in a typically glitzy event that is expected to bring together various Zimbabwean diaspora achievers and guests to the 5-star Intercontinental Hotel Sydney. ZAA Australia Country Director Method Mukundu confirmed the developments and promised another stellar event.

“Our purpose remains the same- to showcase and highlight milestones and achievements by Zimbabweans living in the Australasian region. We aim to continue recognising the people who do all the hard work behind the scenes and these awards are just a clap at them.”

The ZimAchievers Awards recognise and celebrate Zimbabweans who are setting the pace and raising the country’s flag high in the diaspora in various fields such as business, academics, sport, entertainment, media among others, with past winners of the Australian edition including the likes of Tanya Hodza, Evans Mukonza, Ivy Ziyambe and Phillimon Zongo among others.

Nomination lines have opened for this year’s categories here and will run for 6 weeks before shortlisting and voting starts. Mukundu urged all the Zimbabwean diaspora community and friends to come for the awards ceremony.

“Gather your friends and get a table of 10 together, and enjoy a memorable dining experience with and entertainment whilst networking with high achieving Zimbabweans and various other guests.”

Meanwhile, early bird tickets for the event can be purchased on Eventbrite.

The Zimbabwe Achievers Awards were founded by Conrad Mwanza in 2010 and continue to grow and now have a presence in five countries, with successful events in the UK, South Africa and Canada having been held earlier this year with the USA edition expected to round off the ZAA international run after ZAA Australia.

The much anticipated ZAA 10th Anniversary celebrations will be held on the 12th April 2020 in Zimbabwe at the Victoria Falls as part of the ZimThrive Homecoming initiative.

Dr Oliver Mtukudzi with Mama Thandi Modise, chairperson of the South African National Council of Provinces at ZAA South Africa 2018

The Zimbabwe Achievers Awards mourns the loss of an iconic musician and patron of the organisation.
Dr Oliver Mtukudzi was an industrious member of various charitable organisations over the years and was both instrumental and inspirational in the shaping of our African continent.

His influence to the music industry, together with his fearless and creative spirit both inspired and motivated us. His wisdom and leadership stimulated significant change in key areas vital to the development of music and the arts industry in Zimbabwe.
As one of Zimbabwe’s most renowned and most recognised voices to emerge from the country onto the international scene, and with 67 albums to his name, he earned a devoted following across Africa and Europe.

He was a humble man and an exceptional role model. We remember and celebrate his work, his life and for being an example of the excellence to which we as a community aspire.

ZAA UK and South Africa Call for Nominations

The Zimbabwe Achievers Awards (ZAA) International has commenced its 2018 campaigns for its UK and South Africa Editions.(ZAA) UK returns for its 8 th  Anniversary with organisers calling on the public to nominate prospective recipients for this year’s honours while S
outh Africa has been growing strong and plans are underway for its 4 th  Edition.

Award nominations are now open across all categories and the public will have until 31st January to put forward those individuals and organisations they feel have distinguished themselves in various ventures over the past year. The nominee announcement for both editions are scheduled to take place in March and the awards ceremonies are scheduled for April in South Africa and May in the UK. “From our professionals working in various fields to our artists, entrepreneurs, philanthropists and charities, Zimbabwean talent is making its presence felt in our host countries’’ the Chairman for ZAA International Conrad Mwanza said.

He added, “the idea for ZAA was birthed from my motivation to recognise the hard work and achievements of Zimbabweans living and working abroad. Every year, I continue to be amazed at how . Zimbabweans continue to break barriers in their respective fields and that’s what keeps ZAA relevant.”

ZAA International has also released a 3 tier ticket range with early birds at £65pp before 31st  January, £75pp from 1st February to 31st  March and £85pp thereafter. South Africa will follow a similar model with R500 in January, R650pp in February and R800pp thereafter. As per our usual standards, both events will include a 3 course meal and a drinks reception, added Bridget Mudhosi, ZAA South Africa Director.

The high profile occasion has become the highpoint of celebration for professional and artistic achievements by Zimbabweans around the world. Last October, ZAA successfully launched another edition in Australia. The organisers, who have consolidated the awards brand in the UK, US and South Africa felt it was time to extend the platform to Australia, which hosts a number of Zimbabweans. There is a huge pull to host the event in the Motherland and plans are now underway.

Trevor Manyame – ZAA Committee Member

Zimbabweans living in Australia are being encouraged to be part of this historic night of glitz and glamor, at the prestigious Hilton Adelaide Hotel on Saturday 28 October 2017.

Attendance has been confirmed from high profile business people, Australian government officials.

Guests will be treated to a 3 course dinner, an assortment of beverages and mesmerising entertainment.

Zimbabwe Achievers Awards (ZAA) is a distinctly special awards ceremony seeking to recognise Zimbabweans who have pushed the limits against all odds to raise the flag high and do both themselves and their fellow countrymen proud abroad.
The event has become one of the most important in the African Diaspora community, from the United Kingdom, United States of America, South Africa and now Australia.

ZAA founder and businessman Mr Conrad Mwanza said: ‘’The community spirit that has been built and the calibre of individuals and organisations that we have recognised over the years in different countries really shows how talented, determined and studious Zimbabweans are in building something we can all be proud of.”

ZAA International Executive, Mr Trevor Manyame said, “Our main agenda for the inaugural ZAA Australia edition is not just to celebrate a very broad spectrum of talent, art, business, expression and achievement in the Zimbabwean community, but to unite them to share ideas and encourage participation in rebuilding our beloved home country.

“We greatly appreciate all our sponsors, especially Steward Bank and WorldRemit for supporting this distinct ceremony. Without their support this could have not been any better.”

“ZAA is a great leap in the right direction in uniting the Zimbabwean Diaspora community not just in Australia but globally. It’s high time we take advantage of opportunities of this nature to promote economic solution based dialogue, sharing business ideas and opportunities, as well as inspiring positive action among young Zimbabweans in particular and African citizens in general in order to rebuild our nations.” said Mr Trevor Manyame.

The Diaspora community is uniting for the purpose of nation building towards a better dispensation, and views itself as an automatic and vibrant arm to the Zimbabwean government’s efforts for sustainable development through an economic blueprint.

“It is at this juncture that we sought and found it meaningful to engage the patriotic and progressive Zimbabweans in particular and Africans in general to cross pollinate along nation and continental development. The fundamental being dialogue and proposal of action plans which will be implemented thereafter. It is of great concern that government economic blueprint clusters must be fulfilled and supported with extensive contribution of the Diaspora community as well,” added Mr Trevor Manyame.

The inaugural MoneyGram Zimbabwe Achievers award winners were announced at a glittering gala event on Saturday November 8th, 2014, with a star-studded line-up of artists that included the legendary Oliver Mtukudzi, HHP and Berita Khumalo performing at the black tie event held at Gallagher Convention Centrej Johannesburg, South Africa. Actor Leroy Gopal and Radio 2000 talk show host Bertha Charuma ably presented the show as masters of ceremony.

The MoneyGram Zimbabwe Achievers Awards were truly a celebration of extraordinary Zimbabweans’ positive impact on the South African economy, entertainment industry, business, media and sport. MoneyGram Regional Director, South and East Africa Anton Luttig reinforced that MoneyGram is proud to be the headline sponsor of the inaugural MoneyGram Zimbabwe Achievers Awards SA event.

It was an extraordinary night attended by the who is who with proudly Zimbabwean roots gracing the event and ZAA-UK was represented by Executive Director Brian Nyabunze and the Chief Executive Office, Peter Soko.

Warrior’s stars Willard Katsande and Kingston Nkatha were part of the celebratory night with those that donned the national colours before them such as former Highlanders captain Alexander Maseko and long serving Kaizer Chiefs star Tinashe Nengomashe. Top Billing presenter, Simba Mhere born to Zimbabwean missionaries, also showed his allegiance to his roots by joining his fellow countrymen.

Minister of Tourism and Hospitality Walter Mzembi and the ambassador to South Africa represented the government and gave the keynote speech.

“Zimbabweans continue to make a positive impact around the world and South Africa in particular, but it is also important for you in the diaspora to think of how you can also make a contribution at home,” said Mzembi to a thunderous response from the guests.

The uplifting message from the minister was well received but it was no doubt who the stars of the night were. The 79 year old Afro Jazz singer Dorothy Masuka, popularly known as “Auntie Dotty” was recognised for her long service in flying the Zimbabwe flag in South Africa and the world.

Mtukudzi, who fondly calls her his mother, handed the sultry singer the Lifetime Contribution award.
